Note to self:
Heard it said… “What is down in the well will come up in the bucket.”
As I look at my own life… I would be the first to say that if I truly examined what came up in my bucket….from my well – I would definitely not drink from it, but rather discard the contents immediately!
Have you ever said something and wondered afterward…where in the world did that come from? That was my outside voice… I’d like to rewind and try again?
James, when writing about the power of our words has much more to say:
“Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs, neither can salt water produce fresh.” James 3:11-12
Here is the factual truth: “What is down in the well – will come up in the bucket.”
Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
What do the contents of my well look like when I retrieve my bucket?
I submit to you my brothers, that unless God changes the dark, dirty, stagnant contents of my bucket – it’s futile! Romans 12:1-2 speaks to the direction of our hope – God! My mind must continually be “transformed” in order for my contents of my bucket to have that which “proves what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Easier said than done – right? How do I even make an attempt at this seemingly impossible undertaking?
Philippians 4:8-9 gives me an initial and foundational starting point. “Finally brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you.”
True – Honorable – Right – Pure – Lovely – Of Good Repute – Excellence – Worthy of Praise.
The things that come out of our mouth, that then flow into actions come from whatever is inside of us.
So, again, my question for all of us is “what’s in our bucket when it comes up from our well?”
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. Psalm 55:21
Physicians tell us that hostility, jealousy, anger, rage, resentment, and envy are some of the reactions that can cause disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, disorders of the heart, disorders of the skin, and headaches.
The Bible declares the same emotions – hostility, jealousy, anger, rage, resentment, and envy–to be acts of the sinful nature.
God help us!
“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control…” Galatians 5:22-23
“What’s down in the well will come up in the bucket.”
“For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34
Note to self:
Examine on a daily basis what is down in my well…why?
“What’s down in the well will come up in the bucket.”
