“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” Galatians 6:7-8 A fifth lie that most want to believe is, forgiveness eliminates consequences. Paul’s promise to the Galatians is frequently referred to as The Law of the Harvest. Here we see that God will ensure justice, irrespective of His willingness to forgive. The Psalmist promises: “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”1 This promise is frequently applied to New Testament believers with the assumption that when God judges them He will not call attention to their past sins. Two things call into question this conclusion: first, God did not make this application to the nation of Israel when it sinned. Second, it is counter to the teachings of the whole of Scripture. Forgiveness restores the relationship, but it does not eliminate the consequences; it never has and it never will. A teenage child takes the family car against the express wishes of the parents, and dents the fender. Returning to the parents he begs forgiveness. After the parents grant forgiveness, the child says, “Wonderful, now I do not have to repair the dented fender.” When the parents suggest that this will not happen, the child asks, “Then what is the value of forgiveness?” The parents respond, “Restoration of the relationship.” If restoration of your relationship with Jesus Christ is insufficient when He forgives....

“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than than is laid which is Jesus Christ Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” I Corinthians 3:10-15 People want to believe that heaven is the same for everyone. Most of what we know about heaven is conjecture, and for this reason we assume that it will surpass our expectations. For example, the apostle said, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love.”1 People reading this assume that Paul affirms their convictions that heaven will be so great it is beyond their wildest imaginings. In reality, Paul teaches in this passage that our minds cannot comprehend what God has not revealed. What little the Bible does say about heaven ensures us that it will not be the same for all. The I Corinthians 3 passage illustrates the...

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” Matthew 6:19-20 The idea that God wants your love to be altruistic constitutes a third lie. Altruism teaches that people are good with no anticipation or desire for personal gain. This is such a pernicious and insidious lie that I invite you to review it with me. Hope always entails personal gain. You always hope in the direction of what you consider to be in your interest. This means that hope and altruism are mutually exclusive. You can only be altruistic to the degree that you are void of hope. Those who believe that people should be altruistic repudiate the role of hope in motivating people to do what God calls good. However, God created all people in such a way that they are motivated by hope. Altruism insists that people learn to be motivated contrary to the way God made them. Their premise: our job is to educate people in such a way as to correct the mistake God made when He created man. All biblical commands assume that people are motivated by hope. You obey God because you wish to avoid the consequences of His displeasure, and anticipate His rewarding you for your obedience. You do not earn God’s favor by your faithfulness, but God, knowing that He created you with a desire for gain, motivates you by promising eternal rewards for...
