No Time for Quiet Time (by Dusty Alexander)

No Time for Quiet Time (by Dusty Alexander)

I was recently talking to a brother who asked me how my relationship with God was going. I told him it was not where it should be, even though I was studying the word daily. I was sure that increasing my study of the word would resolve the issue and he asked me how my quiet time was going. I told him I didn’t have quiet time and he challenged me to try quiet time for one hour a day, seven days in a row. If I didn’t make the seven days, I would start over. He told me that I would get a taste of God that will leave me hungry. I was willing to try quiet time but I knew I wouldn’t last for an hour, I was just too busy. I started with 15 minutes and by day 20 I was up to 45 minutes still feeling like I could do more. I started waking up an hour and a half earlier and I sustained this for 20 days. Some days I didn’t even need an alarm, I woke hungry for time with my Lord. This isn’t legalism, I just want that time with God no matter how tired I am during the day. After quiet time I feel prepared for the day more so than my rested self without quiet time. What did my quiet time consist of? I didn’t really know what to do so I started reading the bible and using what I found as my prayer topics. This soon opened a flood gate of topics to pray about, to thank God about...
Jesus Christ is Cross Cultural (by Jordan Bradford)

Jesus Christ is Cross Cultural (by Jordan Bradford)

My name is Jordan Bradford. I was raised in the Cleveland Ohio area. My wife and I graduated from college last spring and now are first year teachers in China. I once heard Lee Yih say that Jesus is spread in China on a person to person basis.  While there are other ways to get the good news to people; it seems to me that personal evangelism is also the most effective way to share Jesus in Midwest America.  So what is the difference between talking about Jesus to a Chinese person in Wuhan, China and an American in Upland, Indiana?  From my little experience I have noticed two main differences. First, there are a lot more Chinese people who have never even heard the name of Jesus.  While ignorance of Jesus is probably becoming more common in America, the general public is still aware of Jesus, and if not Jesus, then Christianity.  I would guess that 9 out of 10 people who I have talked to about Jesus in China had never previously heard of Jesus.  This is both refreshing and challenging.  I say refreshing because there is not always a pre-conceived judgment towards Jesus.  Many of the people relate Christianity to America but they do not relate Jesus to Christianity.  I try not to mention the word Christianity in conversations because that usually results in a comment like, “that is good for you westerners but that’s not for us.”  But telling people about Jesus, and what He did for us on the cross, has almost always received a positive response.  It is also a challenge because the...
The Car (by Drew Fossler)

The Car (by Drew Fossler)

A lot of men lead busy lives in today’s fast-paced society. How often do you get the chance to sit down one on one with a guy and talk with him about a topic without him being pulled in a different direction, or distracted, let alone share the Gospel with Him? I’m not aware of many situations where that happens commonly in today’s “go-go-go” society. However, one thing I’ve found is a car ride with an individual can be a great time to get a good one on one conversation going. Even if he has his phone with him, he likely isn’t going to be on it for the entirety of a car ride that lasts more than an hour. There’ll likely be a time where it’s just you and him, sitting there, looking down the road. The radio may be on, but if you start talking with him, asking questions, putting feelers out, you can easily turn the volume down a bit to make sure can you hear each other. On longer car rides, you and he may listen to the radio for an extended period of time, but after a while maybe you say something like, “We’ve been listening to the radio quite a while, let’s talk a bit. How are things going for you?” Or, you could lead with any number of other questions to get the conversation rolling. But, determine to have a plan, and/or an objective, from the outset. The questions you’re prepared to ask should fall in line with that plan/objective. You and he may not end up hitting all the points you’d...
Faithfulness to Opportunity (by Steve Faber)

Faithfulness to Opportunity (by Steve Faber)

I received a call last week, from a brother in CHRIST who was driving to a burn center in Ft. Worth to visit a young man and his mother. The boy had recently suffered third degree burns over 80% of his body in a tragic incident. Howard, who had been a Tuesday morning regular at a “Ministry in the Marketplace” study I led for a couple of years, had seen the story of this young man on the local news the previous evening and felt GOD urging him to meet him. When I asked him if he knew the boy, he said he did not. When I asked him if the young fellow was a believer, he said he didn’t know. He didn’t even know if he would be allowed into the burn unit to see the mother, much less the boy. All he knew was that GOD was urging him to go meet the boy and his mother and that he was to minister “E²” to them. Howard went on to relate that he had won a trip to a ReMax conference in San Antonio, a couple weeks prior. He had taken his wife, who is his business partner in a ReMax office. Together they had listened to a motivational speaker at the meeting, a CHRISTian man who had been badly burned over most of his body. As Howard listened, he appreciated the guy’s unflappable attitude and his encouraging story, but wondered to himself, why he had taken the time out of a very busy schedule, to make the drive down south. Watching the news a couple of...
